Bystanders help put out a grass fire that started along Highway 97 north of Kelowna International Airport on Sunday, July 10, 2022. The Kelowna Fire Department got some help from the public in putting out a grass fire on Sunday. “By the time we got here, I think the bystanders that had stopped had pretty much put everything out and we just put the rest out,” said Captain Mike Hill with the Kelowna Fire Department. He adds that there were multiple calls to 9-1-1 and the BC Wildfire Service to report the small grass fire that was just across the median, along the northbound lanes of the highway. Crews were mopping up the scene around 12:30 Sunday afternoon. The fire is a reminder that it’s starting to get hot and dry in the Okanagan, and a spark can be dangerous. “This time of year, don’t throw cigarettes out the window and be careful out there,” Hill said. While the fire danger rating is low across most of British Columbia right now, there are pockets of moderate danger, including in the South Okanagan.
