This is the third stabbing in the New York City subway this week. On Tuesday, a 55-year-old man was stabbed in the back and punched in the face in an unprovoked attack around 6pm at Brooklyn’s Jay Street-Metrotech station.

Crime is on the rise in New York in general. Mayor Adams pledged to fight crime in the Big Apple, specifically citing the subway fare beat
In January, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that 1,000 more officers would be deployed to what is the nation’s largest subway system.
Violent crime has become endemic in the New York City transportation system in 2022.
Rapes and robberies are up 50 percent compared to the same period this year, according to Metropolitan Transit Authority statistics. Meanwhile, felony assaults rose by more than 15% and grand theft by more than 97%.
NYPD Transit Director Jason Wilcox told the MTA board last Monday that the increase in thefts mostly involved overnight trains. Wilcox said there have been many cases of riders falling asleep on the train and waking up with missing items, the New York Post reports.
According to statistics from the MTA, there were four assaults and 82 cases of harassment of New York City transit workers in June alone
Wilcox added: “We focus on this type of crime. Our detectives are investigating these crimes. But we also ask riders to be more careful in this area when traveling on trains late at night.’
Overall, compared to this time last year, transit crime reports are up 40%.
According to MTA statistics, there were four assaults and 82 cases of harassment of New York City transit workers in June alone.
In 2022, there were 35 attacks on city employees on subway trains and at stations.
While crime is up, subway ridership is also up nearly 35% from this time last year.
In June, it was announced that the NYPD was installing 100 hidden cameras on subway cars across the city.
The cameras are not monitored or streamed in real time, but will be used as backup to help investigators find evidence.
The selected trains are those on which 53% of metro crimes occurred.
