Police said 23 people were shot at the facility — 12 died at the scene and 11 were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries. Two other people were pronounced dead at the hospital. Police have launched investigations into 14 cases of murder and nine cases of attempted murder, according to the statement. “It’s a bad scene. When you see the dead bodies [that] stacked up, you can see that every one of these people [was] I am struggling to get out of the tavern,” Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela told South African news channel ENCA. Mawela said police have yet to establish details of a motive or why people in the tavern were targeted. “I have no doubt that with the cooperation of the community here, we will be able to solve this case,” Mawela added. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward, saying the suspects are still on the run. The massacre in Soweto comes as the country continues to mourn the deaths of 22 youths — some of them as young as 13 — who died under still unclear circumstances in an east London pub last month.
