Ireland travel to Dunedin for the second of three Tests against New Zealand today, looking to bounce back from a humbling defeat a week ago. The All Blacks had lost three of their previous six Tests heading into the series opener, but as it turns out, reports of their demise were greatly exaggerated. They weathered an early Ireland storm before crushing them 20 minutes before half-time to record a 42-19 aggregate victory. As such, Andy Farrell’s men are still looking for a first win on New Zealand soil in their history and although they showed more fight in the second half, it will still be a huge ask to triumph at Forsyth Barr Stadium. They will at least have talismanic skipper Johnny Sexton to call upon after the fly-half was controversially deemed fit despite sitting out the first Test with a suspected concussion. He failed his first HIA to be forced out of action early in Auckland, but passed HIA2 and HIA3 and, under current rules, means he does not have to miss this weekend’s competition despite his history of head injuries. New Zealand 7-17 Ireland, 50 mins
A solid double tackle from the Irish flanks forces the ball free from Ofa Tuungafasi’s grip as New Zealand try to build phases inside the Irish 22. Peter O’Mahony’s role in the tackle leaves him sore but he’s back in between the scrum stuff. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:33 1657355331
TRY IT! New Zealand 7-17 IRELAND (Andrew Porter try, 49 mins)
Try number two for Andrew Porter! Ireland finally have their second, Porter supported by Josh van der Flier as he picked out and drove in the corner, lowering and returning the New Zealand defenders to position themselves under the posts. The prop doubled his international tally tonight. Jonny Sexton converts and James Ryan returns as Ireland are restored to 15 men. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:28 1657355299
New Zealand 7-10 Ireland, 48 mins
Ireland open New Zealand! Relentless physicality from the Irish in carry and clearance and eventually space is created on the right by James Lowe’s offload, Bundee Aki rushing into space and combining with Peter O’Mahony. With Johnny Sexton brilliantly orchestrating, Tadhg Beirne hails Jordie Barrett as the Irish pressure begins to mount. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:28 1657355197
New Zealand 7-10 Ireland, 46 mins
Two and a half minutes to go before James Ryan is allowed back in, so it’s seven against seven at the scrum. It is unstable and resets. This is a good attacking platform for Ireland, charmingly right down the middle. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:26 1657355084
New Zealand 7-10 Ireland, 45 mins
New Zealand stole again! Nice pulling job this time by Sevu Reece, getting past the ball in combination with Sam Cane and coming away with it having executed a perfect jackal. Rieko Ioane threatens on the outside but Bundee Aki tracks him well, biting the knees with a safe diving tackle. Still attacking New Zealand, Beauden Barrett leads the way with brother Scott in energetic pursuit, but the sliding second-row can only hit as he tries to rally. New Zealand 7-10 Ireland, 43 mins
A hectare – after New Zealand leave contact in their own half, Retallick walks away. The doctors rightly took him off the field. Enter Patrick Toupulotou. He takes his place in the All Blacks back line, but it’s his locking partner Scott Barrett who rises high to steal the Irish ball. Leicester Fainga’anuku appears to have been stripped of the ball as he carries into midfield but is ruled to have hit. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:23 1657354875
New Zealand 7-10 Ireland, 41 mins
Hmm. Retallick, confused, is allowed to continue. That seemed like a pretty heavy hit on the head – surprised it’s not even rated. Jamison Gibson-Park stabs a keeper into open space on the blindside, but his kick is touched before McHansen can. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:21 1657354799
New Zealand 7-10 Ireland, 41 mins
Early aerial joy for Ireland, getting their mitts on a high kick and knocking it back their way. But soon after play was stopped – Brodie Retalick’s head has made heavy contact with Johnny Sexton’s hips and the New Zealand lock is struggling as Jaco Peyper blows the whistle. Second half
Gary Ringrose will not be returning to proceedings after this nasty clash with Taavao. Budi Aki remains in the Irish midfield. Ardie Savea was also out for the night after a substitution snafu as New Zealand were forced to make sure they had qualifying first on the field having lost two tight ones. What else can this game have in store for us? Here you go. Harry Latham-Coyle 9 July 2022 09:18
