Rodgers first addressed the outage in a tweet from his official support account shortly before 9 a.m. ET, saying “We are aware of the issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully committed to resolving the issue as soon as possible. We will continue to update you as we have more information to share.” In a statement provided to The Verge and posted on Twitter, Rogers said “We are currently experiencing outages on our wired and wireless networks, and our technical teams are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible. On behalf of all of us at Rogers, we sincerely apologize to our customers and will continue to keep you updated as we have more information to share, including when we expect service to be back up. But other service providers that rely on Rogers to connect their customers shed little light on the extent of the disruption. TekSavvy customer service told customers the outage spans “Ontario, Quebec and the eastern provinces,” with no ETA for a resolution, while the CBC reports that Thunder Bay operator Tbaytel says the Rogers outage is nationwide. Around the same time, there was a huge spike in BGP announcements for the network indicating routing changes, however it is unknown if these were due to the network going offline or part of the cause. Toronto police tweeted that some people in the city are experiencing connection issues calling 911 this morning. “The Rogers Network is experiencing some technical difficulties,” the Toronto Police Twitter account said. “We are working to resolve these issues.” In a follow-up tweet, police confirmed that the 911 center is working and advised anyone who needs to call to stay on the line if it connects and try calling again if it doesn’t. A CBC News report noted that its subsidiary Rogers Fido is also experiencing problems. The article says problems have affected the card payment process and ATMs across Canada. A CBC radio station in Kitchener, Ont., is also offline, while some phone service for Ottawa’s transit agency is down.
