Squid Game, a drama set in South Korea where cash-strapped contestants risk their lives for a cash prize, won best drama and 13 other nominations at September’s Emmy Awards. Succession took home the best drama trophy and eight other awards at the 2020 awards show. Television Academy President Frank Scherma began the nominations announcement by saying a record number of shows had been submitted, reflecting that series production was at an all-time high after being drastically reduced during the pandemic. The Emmys used to be dominated by broadcast networks, then cable, but the rise of streaming services has changed the balance of power — and perhaps the awards themselves. Netflix’s Squid Game joining the Emmy mix is the result of streaming’s global popularity. The Crown, which dominated the 2021 drama awards, was not televised during the eligibility period and is coming out this year.
Actors Short, Oh, Rogen among Canadians in the running

The 74th Emmy Awards will take place on Monday, September 12. (BBC America/Associated Press) Martin Short, Sandra Oh and Seth Rogen are among the Canadians up for this year’s Emmy Awards. Hamilton-born Short won the lead role in a sitcom for Only Murders in the Building, where he will compete against co-star Steve Martin. Nepean, Ont. The Oh native is nominated for lead actress in a drama series for Killing Eve, her fourth time being nominated for the show. And Vancouver-raised Rogen is up for a supporting role in a limited series for Pam & Tommy, a series that revolves around Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s leaked sex tape. Comedian Norm Macdonald, who died last year after a battle with cancer, received posthumous recognition in three Emmy categories for his latest comedy special Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special. The Netflix program got a nod in the pre-recorded variety special category, while Macdonald was among the nominees for director of a variety special and outstanding writing in a variety special. Montreal-born Queer Eye star Antoni Porowski shared a nomination with the show’s five other hosts for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program. Toronto-bred Lorne Michaels earned two nominations — one for writing on NBC’s Saturday Night Live and one for the behind-the-scenes web series Saturday Night Live Presents: Stories From The Show, which is available for Outstanding Short Form non-fiction or reality series. JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) announced the nominees at 11:30 am. ET on Tuesday.
