The two people killed were not immediately identified, but were described as a 50-year-old woman and a 7-year-old man. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said “our hearts go out to a group of people who were just using the water in our city… This is a devastating time for them and those who are part of the families who were there.” The incident occurred around 2:46 p.m. when the FDNY and New York City Police Department responded to a drowning call. Two people were pulled from the water by FDNY and NYPD personnel. One person was taken to Roosevelt Hospital in critical condition and another was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital in critical condition, the FDNY said. One of the people in critical condition is the boat’s captain, NYPD officials said at a news conference Tuesday. Looks like some police or rescue activity on the Hudson River, #hoboken side. A rescue boat near a boat that capsized in the Hudson River on July 12, 2022. CBS New York A Coast Guard official told CBS New York that it was not immediately clear what caused the boat to capsize, but said there was an alert for the small boat, meaning the waves were high, at the time of the incident. The US Coast Guard also responded to the incident. The boat started in Weehawken, New Jersey, just across the river from midtown Manhattan, reports CBS New York. NYPD Assistant Chief James McCarthy said Tuesday that the boat had been chartered by a family and some friends, and that the owner was following him on a jet ski. McCarthy said the investigation is still in its early stages, and it’s unclear whether the boat was overloaded or what other conditions may have caused it to capsize. As of Tuesday afternoon, the boat had been towed downtown, where officials were working to get it right.
